What is ZIGI?
ZIGI supports and advocates for people who have been historically marginalized in STEM fields due to their gender identity and expression.
Is ZIGI a Women in Science group?
There is plenty of overlap between ZIGI and other ‘Women in …’ groups, but there are three important differences: 1) We do not only invite women to be part of ZIGI, but also invite gender minorities to participate; 2) We invite allies to join us for some of our events; and 3) We also invite non-scientists!
Ok, so ZIGI is for Women and Gender Minorities at the Zuckerman Institute?
Yes!
Is ZIGI only for the Zuckerman Institute?
Yes. If you are interested in similar organizations at Columbia University, please visit the WISC website here. If you are someone affiliated with the Zuckerman Institute, you are welcome to join ZIGI. This includes undergraduate students, visiting scientists, and others who may not be at ZI full-time.
How is ZIGI structured?
ZIGI leadership
We meet twice per month to make long-term plans and keep things moving. We meet with the ZI leadership to address any issues around gender that may arise at the institute. We are also in charge of the budget to run our events. Each member of the leadership leads a team.
ZIGI teams
The ZIGI teams organize events or are responsible for specific parts of ZIGI. Examples include:
Social events team;
Book club team;
Seminar team;
Research team;
Mission statement writers.
ZIGI community
Everyone at ZI is part of our community and welcome to join us for events. There is no official membership or email list.
