As scientists we wear many hats. We apply the scientific method, read papers, and design experiments.

But in practice, we also perform delicate surgeries, train animals, build equipment, and microscopes, and write code to run and analyze our experiments.

These various tasks require skills which are often taught through the lens of gender-stereotypes.

The goal of this series of events is to celebrate the various hats we wear, learn new skills, learn from each other, and discover each other's interest across all genders.

Transferable skills across all genders

ZIGI Socials presents its new series of Arts & Crafts evenings

Loops & Loupes :

A Surgical skills and Arts & Crafts workshop

The Loops and Loupes event was the first of a series of socials in which we worked to break stereotypes.

At this event the ICM veterinarian staff joined us for a surgical suturing workshop.

We also had fun with needle point, mending clothes and crocheting to hone our skills with threads and needles, meanwhile getting to know each other.

Spooky Scary Safety Extravaganza

!CAUTION!

Our Halloween event in collaboration with EH&S featured demonstrations and games all around lab safety with an eerie twist. We learned how to dispose of vampire-slaying werewolf-killing waste at ZI, how to clean a nasty alien fluid spill and how to take off contaminated gloves without getting infected by the zombie virus.

At this and previous events we collaborated with groups at ZI and Columbia to spread the word about ZIGI beyond the core academic staff.

We also launched our distribution of pronoun disclosure stickers that can be placed on your badge that we will have ready to hand out at all future ZIGI events with the goal of normalizing the disclosure of pronouns at ZI.

We are looking forward to future events!
